R&D Engineer
The Role
You will develop the hardware modules that control, manipulate, and eliminate particle contamination sources inside Applied Materials’ next-generation SEM inspection tools — sitting at the intersection of physics, materials/surface science, and mechanical engineering. Your work will have a measurable impact on the most advanced chips manufactured today.
The problems you’ll face are often invisible, intermittent, and poorly understood. That’s exactly what makes this role compelling.
What You’ll Do
- Design and develop hardware modules that reduce contamination sources
- Investigate and resolve complex contamination events at the root-cause level
- Embed contamination control in next-generation product from day one
- Define best practices for building clean tools and knowledge across the team
- Engage with customers and vendors on contamination challenges and specifications
- Why This Role Matters
- At single-digit nanometer feature sizes, a single particle landing on a wafer can damage critical structures, causing the device to be unusable. On a 300mm wafer carrying hundreds of high-value dies, particles contamination isn’t a housekeeping concern — it’s an enabler. The inspection tools are held to the highest standard.
- What You Bring
- MSc or PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering
- Advantages: Developing Semiconductor manufacturing or inspection equipment
- Hands-on multidisciplinary experience with particle behavior, contamination metrology, or cleanliness
- What sets you apart: You are self-driven, relentlessly curious, and thrive in problem spaces where the answers aren’t written down yet.
